TERS to be extended to restaurants for July
JOBURG – Alberts said she believed the move to adjusted alert Level 4 without any financial support or relief from government was completely irresponsible.
The Restaurant Association of South Africa (Rasa) is breathing a small sigh of relief after hearing that government has announced an extension of UIF/TERS payments to the restaurant industry for July.
CEO of RASA Wendy Alberts says that applications are likely to open within the next two weeks.
“The Restaurant Association of South Africa is thankful for the support from Cosatu [Congress of South African Trade Unions] in these difficult times,” said RASA in a statement.
Alberts said she believed the move to adjusted alert Level 4 without any financial support or relief from government was completely irresponsible.
“You can’t just close an industry without securing support for them to pay their bills… This TERS relief at least means that there will be some support for staff working at these restaurants so that they will not starve.”
“I do not believe that this is enough to save our industry. Minister Patel [Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel] needs to also suspend lease and debt payments until we are able to operate at full capacity,” said Alberts.
Alberts added that she is also uncertain about how much money has been allocated to the industry for the TERS payments.
