Celebrating 130 years of Thrupps

Thrupps continues providing a refreshing and complementary blend of quality food products sourced from all over the world, including Europe, America and India.

The Thrupps experience began in 1892 during the very early days of Johannesburg when Charles Henry Thrupp saw an opportunity to supply goods to the growing population of a booming gold mining town.

His first store on the busy and dusty corner of President and Eloff streets in the centre of town became known as the establishment of choice for the discerning customer who sought imported products from all over the world together with quality local produce. Thrupps delivery of groceries and fine foods throughout greater Johannesburg started with a horse and cart or by bicycles, thereafter by motorised vehicles or by train even to remote areas such as Graaf Reinet or Colesburg.

Delivery has been the cornerstone of the Thrupps service ethic. The delivery service has been fundamental to the service expectations of their customers, and so over the years, Thrupps has developed a sophisticated system of being able to quickly deliver any product to our customers, wherever they may be.

The warehouse and Illovo Emporium continues to be the base from which Thrupps has for, over 130 years, providing a refreshing and complementary blend of quality food products sourced from all over the world – Europe, America, India, the East and naturally the bulk from local African suppliers.

Thrupps remains close to the financial heart of Johannesburg alongside some customers whose families have lived here for five generations.

Thrupps remains committed to serving their long-standing customers and look forward to welcoming new faces into the Thrupps family.
