PARKVIEW – National and international come together for the love of basketball.

Players from near and far go to Zoo Lake to make use of the basketball courts there. An added benefit is that the Zoo Lake Basketball courts were recently revamped courtesy of the Hennessy International Hidden Court Campaign.

At the exclusive unveiling event held at Zoo Lake in Parkview, attendees enjoyed music, dance, games, basketball matches as well as some Hennessy drinks.

Event MC, TV host Kim Jayde said cognac distiller Hennessy has been collaborating with the National Basketball Association for two years now and was on that day on the mission to unveil the iconic courts in collaboration with graphic artist Sindiso ‘Riot’ Nyoni. She added that the courts were there for the community to enjoy for as long as possible.

Co-MC, rapper and TV host Siyabonga Ngwekazi also known as ‘Scoop Makhathini’ added, “This can benefit people that don’t even drink Hennessy, sportspeople and the supporting community at large.”

MMC of Community Development Ronald Harris thanked everyone, including the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, the executive mayor, the Zoo Lake Users Committee and Hennessy for the beautiful project.

We believe this court will be used for the development of basketball in South Africa. Basketball and other sports are an economic generator for young people. I trust that as we cut this ribbon, Johannesburg’s golden star will shine and that dream will become a reality.”

On behalf of the Zoo Lake Users Committee, managing director Fran Haslam said the newly refurbished basketball court will definitely put the Zoo Lake Basketball courts in a different league and on the map in terms of international exposure. “We feel flattered and honoured that our court is their first in Africa. What an honour and privilege.

“We are so grateful to Hennessy for their generosity. It certainly was a very professional team putting it all together and we so appreciate all the help, initiative and support we have received from them. A slam dunk for the city of Johannesburg and the world’s most unifying sport”.
