The Norwood Community Police Forum (CPF) encourages community members to form street committees.
Deputy chair executive of the CPF Nomcebiso Ngqinambi said the street committees are the community watchdogs that work on the ground to alert the police of crime hotspots.
She said different ways can be used to form these committees, but the easiest way is by using WhatsApp. However, people can also meet in person.
“Having Norwood community members participate in this particular initiative will help create a productive, peaceful, and crime-free environment,” Ngqinambi added.
According to Ngqinambi, connected communities give birth to great initiatives in their neighbourhood. “Street committees are important structures that play a major role in creating strong communities.”
The Norwood Community Police Forum shares the role of the street committees:
- Supply information to the police
- Identification of suspects and suspicious behaviour as a group
- Crime detection and prevention at an early stage
- Most importantly, get to know your community
- Resolving problems
- Promote communication
- Can help with community development and initiatives such as youth development and women’s empowerment.
