A hearty performance

Two of the runners forfeited their run to assist one of their own who had sprained her ankle.

The Parktown High School for Girls cross-country runners performed with heart in their first race of the season.

Director of sports at the school Catherine McCreesh said they embarked on their first race, on a muddy and treacherous course, on April 29.

The pre-season training in Term 1 and the holiday, is certainly paying off, with four seniors and five juniors placing in the top 20 athletes of their respective categories. Both the Junior A and Senior A teams placed second overall, said McCreesh.

While 38 learners took part in the first race, of which 35 finished, it is unfortunate that one runner slipped and fell tearing the ligaments in her ankle. Two of our runners forfeited their run to get her back safely. We wish her a speedy recovery.

There were 78 runners competing in the senior race and 66 in the junior race. So well done to all the runners who competed, said McCreesh.

McCreesh extended a special mention to the runners below who placed in the top 20 of their races:

  • Jasmin Vermeulen: fifth place – senior race
  • Leah Cornell: ninth place – senior race
  • Racheal Steven: 12th place – senior race
  • Bertina Sibanda: 20th place – senior race
  • Zinathi Kema: 10th place – junior race
  • Jade Freeman: 11th place – junior race
  • Phethego Mello: 12th place – junior race
  • Lehlogonolo Ramoshaba: 15th place – junior race
  • Enreth Daniel: 16th place: junior race.
