The battle begins for the new Carling Knockout Cup

Football fans wait with bated breath to see which of the 16 teams will make the quarterfinal berth of the new Carling Knockout.

The battle is set to begin for the championship of the newly introduced Carling Knockout Cup which has a whopping prize purse of R20m with the winner smiling all the way to the bank with close to R7m.

The prize money was announced by Premier Soccer League spokesperson Fhatuwani Mpfuni and league log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns will open the stakes with an away clash with TS Galaxy in the Mbombela Stadium this coming Wednesday, October 18.

The R20m is the grand prize money of the tournament which includes the total prize money of R16m for the various stages of the tournament and appearance fees for the teams from the last 16 rounds right through to the final which total R4m, making the Carling Knockout one of the richest cup competitions of the league.

The Rockets-Masandwana clash for a spot in the quarterfinals will be followed on October 20 by an Orlando Pirates-Cape Town Spurs at the iconic Orlando Stadium which is home for the Buccaneers, followed by four clashes on Saturday, October 21, between Lamontville Golden Arrows against Cape Town City at the Mpumalanga Stadium in KZN, Chippa United against Stellenbosch at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth).

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs will lock horns with AmaZulu at the FNB Stadium while Sekhukhune United will complete the Saturday matches with a home tie against Royal AM at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

The following day, October 22, Richards Bay-Moroka Swallows will do battle at the King Zwelithini Stadium while SuperSport United and Polokwane City will complete the last 16 round with a clash at the TUT Stadium in Tshwane.

Football lovers await the outcomes of the last 16 rounds with bated breath to see which of the teams will make the quarterfinal berth, whose clashes will be revealed in a draw that will be conducted later and then followed by the announcement of the venues and kick-off times and dates.
