Parktown Boys’ High School Grade 8 learner Ali Elsaigh dedicates his mornings and break times on the memorial lawns, challenging other learners to intense chess matches.
Ali finds inspiration from the legendary chess players Magnus Carlsen and Rashid Nezhmetdinov.
Head of advancement Malcolm Williams said Ali’s ability to turn seemingly drawn positions into wins particularly fascinates him, and he aspires to master this skill.
The Grade 8 learner said, “I aim to achieve full colours in both chess and academics. I dream of leading the chess team as its captain and becoming the top board, not only in the school but potentially in the country.”
Williams added choosing Parktown Boys’ High School was a natural decision for Ali since his older brother was at the school.
“Ali is already in the C team and is steadily challenging his way up the ranks, already playing against boys who are mostly older than him.”
He concluded that the chess player continued to inspire and captivate with his unwavering dedication to the game of chess.
