Community gets down and dirty with shovels at Zoo Lake

100 bags filled with litter and trash were removed from the Zoo Lake in Parkview following a clean-up by community members.

A successful clean-up was conducted at Zoo Lake on February 24, with the collaborative efforts of the community.

Members came from Parkview, Parkwood, Saxonwold, and other areas surrounding the Jan Celliers Laerskool.

“Twenty-five volunteers cleaned the lake, the area surrounding, and various adjoining places. We had a second team cleaning from Ennis Road traffic lights to the swimming pool which filled about 100 bags,” said active community resident Stuart Norman.

Not only did the clean-up help to beautify the area, it also created 14 jobs, Norman explained.

He added that on February 25, the same paid volunteers would work and complete ‘heavy lifting’ tasks and in total 28 jobs were added.

Resident Stephen Mothoa noted that he and his family enjoyed being at the lake, “We decided to take a walk at Zoo Lake, as it is therapeutic and creates beautiful memories for children who enjoy running around freely.”

Mothoa added that as a sports scientist, who majored in recreational and leisure studies, he was fond of parks and recreational spaces and felt privileged to still experience the Zoo Lake.
