St Teresa’s learner earns silver medal at archery championships

St Teresa’s Junior School, learner Caitlyn Shaw walked away with a silver medal at the 74th South African National Archery Championships recently.
Caityln said she loved competing at the nationals. “It was my first time shooting at such a big event. I was very proud of myself, and I will compete in future competitions for a gold medal.”
The Grade 5 learner noted that she started archery when she was 9 years old.
“I like archery because I have learned many new skills and made friends. I especially love it when I get an ‘X’ (bulls-eye).”
She added that her coach made the sports fun and during practice, they played games to increase our aim and accuracy.
Caitlyn learned skills which included being patient and taking her time when she took a shot.
She has also learned better hand-eye coordination, “When I first started archery, I could not close my left eye properly, so I wore an eye patch to help. My coach calls me ‘the Pirate’.”
The 11-year-old practises once a week for an hour a week and advises other interested children to give the sport a try, learn new skills, and make new friends while at it.
