The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has implemented lane reductions on the M1 freeway, travelling southbound between Carr and Smit streets.
This is to accommodate the current work on the site of the recent fire. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when approaching the site and expect delays on the M1-South during these times.

The closure on Smit Street, under the bridge, remains in place until JRA and City Power conclude the emergency work on the affected bridge sections.
Traffic is currently impacted in the following travel directions:
- Travelling east and west along Smit Street between Braamfontein and Brixton.
- Access to the M1 northbound at Smit Street from Braamfontein and access to Brixton when taking the Smit Street off-ramps from the M1 north and south.
Expected Delay Times:
- Afternoon Peak 15:00 – 18:00): Additional 30-40 minutes
- Morning Peak (7:00 – 9:00): Additional 10-15 minutes
Motorists can use the following alternative routes: - Use the M31 (Houghton Drive, Joe Slovo Drive) for a smoother journey towards M2, M1
southbound to Ormonde. - Take the Jan Smuts off-ramp, Berthat and Simmonds Streets as an alternative route
to reach M2 and M1 southbound.
