The celebratory event, which celebrated the elderly turning 90+, began five years ago. Social work manager Lorraine le Roux added: “This year we have a huge turnout, made up of 17 people, with two being males. We usually give them a goodie bag filled with gifts, play music, and give them food”
The day is to celebrate the elderly and make them feel special. Magrietha van Zyl and Phyllis Scharneck are the oldest residents at the centre, turning 98 this year.

Here are some interesting tidbits about some elderly patients:
Magrietha van Zyl
In August, van Zyl will be celebrating a remarkable milestone, her 98th birthday. For 10 years, she has been an integral part of the family at Park Care Centre’s 24/7 nursing care facility. Van Zyl was born in Koffiefontein, in the then Orange Free State, and journeyed through life wrapped in love, dedication, and strength, raising five children.
Hazel Padayachee
This October, Padayachee will be celebrating her 92nd birthday. Born and raised in Harding, KwaZulu-Natal, she spent her childhood years in this quaint town before continuing her education and growing up with dreams that led her on journeys across our country. After becoming a widow, she found herself in need of a supportive environment, one that would offer her essential nursing care, as well as the companionship of peers.
