In attendance for the ceremony was the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day NPO founder, Carolyn Steyn.

Steyn said she couldn’t believe the excitement the crochet project brought to the school. “It is an honour to be at Parktown High School for Girls today. It has been a long time coming. There is so much excitement, enthusiasm, and politeness.”

The founder explained that the crochet project began after she was challenged to make 67 blankets for Mandela Day by Mandela’s former private secretary Zelda Le Grange.

11 years later, the NPO’s work holds three Guinness World Records, and schools and prisons have been consistently involved in crocheting projects. “I am proud of what 67 blankets has become. A movement for good and change, that unites communities and people from all walks of life, religions, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Every blanket that we make has a label attached to it with our trademark heart logo, and the recipient will know, through the label, that Nelson Mandela’s legacy is still alive.”

67 blankets ambassador Phethego Mello noted that the school’s crocheting project was a fun way to acquire a new skill. She highlighted several people who bought wool and crochet hooks, showing their interest in the project, and explained how the 67 blankets volunteers played a role in helping the different grades learn how to crochet.
