Parktown High School for Girls hosts surprise performance by Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra
An unexpected symphony of sound echoed through the school as the orchestra delivered a surprise performance which left learners and staff alike mesmerised by the power of live music.
In a delightful turn of events, the renowned Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) treated the learners and staff of Parktown High School for Girls to a surprise live performance on April 16. The performance, which took place in the school’s auditorium, was a heartwarming and inspiring occasion that left everyone in awe.

The JPO’s repertoire included an eclectic mix of musical styles, with memorable pieces such as Jabulani and Doobeedoo, by South African band Freshly Ground. The orchestra’s performance brought a vibrant energy to the room, showcasing incredible versatility and passion for music. For many in the audience, it was the first time hearing a full orchestra perform such modern and local compositions, which blended orchestral grandeur with contemporary African rhythms.
One of the highlights of the performance was the chance to see a variety of exotic and unusual instruments. Some of these were unfamiliar to the learners and staff, sparking curiosity and excitement. Among the musicians performing was Thokozani Mazibuko, who is a member of the JPO, but also the coach for the school’s brass musicians.
