Africa’s leading and longest-running contemporary art fair, FNB Art Joburg, is set to return for the 18th consecutive year.

Speaking at Parktown on July 5, FNB’s Brand Experience Lead, Nkosana Matyeshana, explained that for the past 18 years, the bank has been at the forefront of amplifying African voices on the world stage through art.

“It’s worth reminding ourselves of the founding objectives of this fair, which were to provide African artists and galleries a platform to showcase their work to the world. As a bank, we believe that culture and creativity are essential to a thriving society. Contemporary art tells stories of hope, who we are, how we live, where we and where we are headed.”
Matyeshana added that by supporting platforms like the FNB Art Joburg, they were investing in the continent’s cultural expression and ensuring that artists were not only seen but supported locally and internationally.
Thato Toeba, who was announced as the 2025 FNB Art Prize winner, said when they pivoted into art at 30 years old, they didn’t think their work would win them an award as quickly as it did.

“To be recognised with other artists who have won the same prize is not only a shock but an honour.”
Toeba was born in 1990 in Maseru and is an artist, lawyer and social sciences researcher working with mixed-media photomontage and assemblage.
Managing director of FNB Art Joburg, Mandla Sibeko, added that he was continuously reminded that the fair was more than just a four-day event, “We are a platform that is committed to year-long development, protection and the celebration of African contemporary art. We are here today because of the unwavering support of our headline sponsor, FNB, who believed in this vision 18 years ago.”
The FNB Art Joburg will have over 40 galleries that represent 40 different countries.
The fair will be divided into seven sections: Gallery hub, Gallery lab, Max, etc., Org, Aux and Gif.
