Kicks of confidence: Taekwondo brings joy to Johannesburg Children’s Home
The children from Johnnesburg Children's Home discovered the power of confidence and fun when Norwood martial arts studio Ultimate Martial Arts and Fitness hosted a taekwondo day filled with laughter, life lessons, and board-breaking moments.
The echo of laughter mixed with the sound of snapping boards at the Johannesburg Children’s Home in Observatory, where the children were treated to a day of taekwondo on August 16. The event, hosted by Ultimate Martial Arts and Fitness in Norwood, was more than just an energetic afternoon; it was a chance to build confidence, discover new skills, and leave with memories that will last long after the mats are packed away.

Carol Woolf, manager of Ultimate Martial Art and Fitness, said the day exceeded all expectations. “The children were absolutely incredible. At first, some were a little hesitant, but once they started moving, their confidence just blossomed. Seeing the joy on their faces when they achieved something new, especially breaking a board for the first time, was one of the most rewarding moments I have ever witnessed.”

The idea was born after one of the studio’s young students shared his own experiences with the home through the Scouts. His story stirred the team to give back in a way that reflected their passion. Taekwondo, with its mix of discipline, fun, and empowerment, felt like the perfect gift.
The day was made possible thanks to the generosity of the community. Support came from parents of the Ultimate Martial Arts students, the Democratic Alliance Ward 73 Branch Committee, Joziwood, and the Lower Houghton Residents Association, all of whom played a vital role in ensuring the children enjoyed a truly memorable experience. Their contributions, both big and small, added to the spirit of giving that defined the event.

Beyond the kicks and stances, the lessons ran deeper. The children were reminded that strength is as much about the mind as it is about the body, that respect for themselves and others is vital, and that even when something feels difficult, perseverance can lead to surprising achievements.
For the organisers, the success of the day was clear. “If even one child left thinking: ‘I didn’t know I could do that, but I did’, then the day was a success,” Woolf said.
One child summed it up simply, saying it was: “A lot of fun and a great experience.”
Encouraged by the response, Ultimate Martial Art and Fitness hopes to create more opportunities like this, not only with the Johannesburg Children’s Home, but with other community organisations as well. The studio also dreams of finding sponsors to support children in joining ongoing classes, allowing them to continue developing their skills and confidence.

The public can also play a part. From volunteering time and sponsoring events, to simply spreading the word, every contribution helps create a stronger community. As Woolf added: “When the community comes together for children, we give them more than just a skill; we give them hope, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.”
