A violent shootout between police, security officers, and suspected criminals has left three dead.

A dramatic shootout unfolded in Parktown, Johannesburg, earlier today, leaving three suspects dead after an exchange of gunfire with police and private security officers.

According to authorities, the confrontation erupted when officers intercepted a group believed to be involved in a string of violent crimes, including cash-in-transit robberies and kidnappings. Firearms and ammunition were recovered at the scene as police secured the area.

Emergency services responded swiftly, and investigators are combing through evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

UPDATE:

Police have revealed that the three suspects killed in the Parktown shootout were suspected kidnappers.

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the men were involved in the June 2025 kidnapping of a Chinese national and had recently attempted to abduct another businessman. They were reportedly on their way to commit a robbery when police intercepted them, leading to the fatal confrontation.

Nearby residents said the shooting occurred at around 11:45 this morning.
