Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse fires ceremonial tee shot

Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Mpho Phalatse fired off the ceremonial tee shot to officially set the 2022 Joburg Open International Golf Tournament in motion at the Houghton Golf Club.

Speaking on November 24, Phalatse wished all golfers the best of luck in battling it out for top honours.

“We know that golf courses are where business deals are struck. So, we believe that this is the place where we are going to talk about how we are going to build, repair, and grow the city as well as attract investment,” she said.

The executive mayor hoped the tournament would attract international investors to Johannesburg to boost the economy.

Englishman Dan Bradbury led the suspended first round of the Open with an eight-under-par 63.

“I had some momentum on my second nine and then the first thunderstorm stopped that. But I can’t really complain with a 63, it’s as good a start as I could’ve wished for.”

Bradbury was grateful to receive an invitation to the tournament and to make his first trip to South Africa.

“I received the phone call on Friday afternoon so this past weekend was about getting out here and seeing what I could do. My mom [Sandra] is with me as well so it’s nice to have company.”
