Nando’s headquarters, Lorentszville hosts food innovation discussion and tasting

The Great Pretender is made from pea protein, vital wheat gluten, beans and chickpeas, but tastes just like the original chicken meals.

The Nando’s brand tackled food innovation discussions and hosted a tasting at their headquarters in Lorentzville.

Speaking on November 25, Nando’s head of food, Pascale Sobiecki said the restaurant adopted plant-based products a few years ago when they came to the forefront of the market.

“I can quite relate to [being] a flexitarian- in that you don’t want to constantly consume meat. Some people don’t eat meat for religious reasons which is where Nando’s plant-based comes in and accommodates them, as well as the younger generation that cares about planet earth and the type of food produced.”

Sobiecki noted that the plant-based products were well received by consumers and the brand sold double what it predicted.

According to a statement issued by Nando’s media liaison, Vinncent Maake the restaurant’s latest plant-based meal was called The Great Pretender.

“It is made from pea protein, vital wheat gluten, beans and chickpeas, but tastes just like our original chicken meals. The Great Pretender also pairs perfectly with your favourite Nando’s sauces.”

An invited guest, Danny Mdluli said he was pleasantly surprised by the plant-based wrap.

“It’s so delicious, one even forgets that he/she is not eating meat. The sauces add to the flavour as well.”
