Ward 72 takes a stand against the abuse of women and children
The 16 Days of Activism for no violence against women and children campaign is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from November 25 (International Day of No Violence against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day).
Ward 72 councillor, Daniel Schay encourages community members to pledge against gender-based violence.
Speaking on December 1, Schay said his ward committee organised a pledge signing event against women and children in light of 16 days of activism.
“The main idea of today is to raise awareness of gender-based violence in our ward and communities and also for people to take a pledge in our communities to stop the violence. People today are signing a pledge and are receiving an orange ribbon.”

Schay added that people could alternatively donate R50 towards a children’s home Impilo which was a protection home for vulnerable children and was a home that was involved in women’s issues.”
Community member, Zanele Mabizzini said she gladly pledges against women and children abuse and also said such initiatives were necessary to put the message about violence out there.
The Union of Jewish Women’s manager Vanessa Weltman said it was important for the women’s union to be visible at such initiatives.

“It was important that we stood together with other organisations against gender-based violence.”
Weltman concluded that the union not only embraces gender-based violence victims, but the union also lends its voice to the voiceless.”
