100 pairs of sneakers donated to Special Olympics SA

Sneaker Shack in Rosebank’s partnership with Total Sports and SOSA affirms the power of collaboration in creating positive change in communities.

The inadequate recognition for special Olympians was addressed at the Special Olympics South Africa (SOSA) partnership announcement. SOSA were brought into a partnership with Sneaker Shack, based in Rosebank, and Totalsports. The partnership was announced on April 1 at the Sneaker Shack store in Rosebank where a handover of 100 sneakers also took place.

CEO of SOSA, Ancilla Smith, received the donation in the presence of the 2023 SOSA National Team that will be competing at the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany from June 17 to 25.

Smith said, “A lot of our athletes come from impoverished backgrounds. Athletes with intellectual disabilities don’t receive the same attention as other athletes yet they work just as hard if not more.” She added that last year the athletes brought home over 30 medals and therefore deserved all the recognition and funding required.

In addition to the donation, the Sneaker Shack announced that all sneakers donated during the month of April at any of their 11 outlets and at any Total Sports store will be given to SOSA to support the over 57 000 athletes that they serve nationally.

The partnership is viewed as the beginning of what promises to be a meaningful and impactful relationship, as all parties remain committed to promoting inclusivity and supporting the development of athletes with intellectual disabilities.
