David West: I thought it was an earthquake at first but saw other speculations on internet. The best that I could do if it happens now is to run. The awareness to people on the internet was fast but I don't know about the city officials.
Johannesburg CBD experienced an underground explosion on July 19 at Bree Street. It has been suspected to have been caused by the underground gas pipelines in the area. Motorists and pedestrians are urged by the Johannesburg Road Agency to avoid the areas to allow emergency and other critical services. Rosebank Killarney Gazette went to the street and asked residents what they think of the explosion, what they would do if they were there at that time and if they think the city responded well.
Here are the responses:
Sarah Khumalo: I don’t know what the cause might be, but I was scared for my daughter because she lives in Braamfontein. If it would happen, I would try to run. I don’t know if the city responded quickly.Zinhle Gumbi: I think it might be gas explosion but I am not sure. If the road would explode I would try to run for my life. I’m not sure if the city responded well because on the circulating videos I did not see any officials.Joe Ngangu: I have no idea what might have caused the explosion even though there is speculation on social media. Some things are unexpected so I would have no strength to do anything if the road would explode like it did in the CBD.
