Kingsmead celebrates 90th birthday at assembly

A school birthday assembly was held at the Kingsmead College in Rosebank to celebrate the school turning 90.

In one of the many celebrations for their 90th birthday, Kingsmead College held a birthday assembly for the whole school. Headmistress at Kingsmead College Lisa Palmer said on October 10, 1933, the school’s founder Doris V Thompson held a meeting at the Carlton Hotel, Johannesburg with the hope of starting the school.

“She had hoped there would be at least 10 to 12, maybe a dozen or so, people attending. This is because she had this vision of starting an independent school for girls. What happened was that the room was too small for all the parents that arrived and they had to move to another bigger room,” said Palmer.

There was great interest right from the beginning and Palmer believes what’s important is that they’ve kept true to her vision, her writing, and the values of Kingsmead. Palmer said these values are still as relevant today as they were 90 years ago.

“We build on those that have come before us and she (Thompson) laid a perfect foundation for the school. The values still stand and are relevant 90 years later. So, we are celebrating this milestone birthday and we look forward to the next ten years.

“We had a beautiful assembly this morning with our whole school right from our Grade 000 to our Grade 12s. A beautiful cake with lots of singing and just remembering why she started the school and how grateful we are that we belong to this magnificent place. She said there would be more celebratory events.
