Lions roar in delight as Johannesburg Zoo’s new enrichment structures unveil
Johannesburg Zoo has partnered with Leogem Property Projects to create an innovative new environment for its lions, blending cutting-edge design with animal welfare.
In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Johannesburg Zoo and Leogem Property Projects have united to enhance the lives of the zoo’s iconic lions.
On November 29, a vibrant celebration marked the completion of a stunning upgrade to the lion enclosure, transforming the space into a more dynamic and enriching environment for these majestic creatures.
This innovative partnership combines the zoo’s century-long commitment to wildlife conservation with Leogem’s cutting-edge design expertise. The focus was to create custom-built enrichment structures that simulate the challenges of the wild, encouraging the lions to engage in natural behaviours and remain physically and mentally stimulated.

The new additions to the enclosure are not just structures; they are thoughtfully designed features to promote the lions’ well-being. “The lions were captivated when the first structure went in. They were all gathered around, eager to investigate,” said Louise Gordon, the executive manager of Johannesburg Zoo. “It’s been thrilling watching the lions interact with the new elements. Some even take to lounging on the structures while others find shade underneath. The improvement to their habitat is remarkable.”
The three new structures were crafted to replicate aspects of the lions’ natural habitat, fostering an environment where they can engage in instinctive activities, from climbing and exploring to socialising and resting. These additions not only enhance the lions’ lives but also provide visitors with an extraordinary glimpse into the lives of these magnificent animals.
Leogem Property Projects, renowned for its excellence in design and construction, sees this collaboration as a perfect alignment of their values. By blending innovative design with conservation efforts, Leogem is contributing to a legacy that improves animal care and deepens the public’s connection to wildlife.

For both the zoo and Leogem, the partnership represents more than a successful project, it is a step towards a future where conservation, innovation, and community engagement go hand in hand. “We are incredibly grateful to Leogem for their support and look forward to future projects together,” Gordon added. “This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the zoo and the animals in our care.”
With these cutting-edge improvements, the Johannesburg Zoo is setting a new standard for animal welfare in South Africa, ensuring that the lions, along with countless other species, continue to thrive for generations to come.
