Looking back with gratitude: St Columba’s outreach wraps up the year
St Columba’s outreach team reflected on a year filled with generosity, compassion, and the spirit of giving.
As the festive season blankets Parkview with its joyful spirit, the St Columba’s outreach team pauses to reflect on a year of generosity, compassion, and unwavering community support. Guided by their mission to feed the hungry and serve the vulnerable in the love of Christ, they have touched countless lives through their selfless efforts.
Central to their work is the kindness kitchen, which serves over 1 500 breakfasts every month. Volunteers, donors, and the caring Parkview community power this vital initiative. From providing meals to schoolchildren without lunch packs to hosting weekly medical screenings, the impact has been profound. Special moments have highlighted the year, including Easter egg collections, Mandela Day collaborations, and the much-loved community Christmas breakfast buffet, set for December 24. This festive event will include African treats, care packs, and festive goodies, embodying the spirit of Christmas.

Their focus on women and children has brought joy and hope to many. Girls at Guild Cottage are celebrated with birthday cakes, lovingly baked by volunteers, while the annual Santa Shoes Project provides strong lace-up shoes and socks to young learners, ensuring they step confidently into the new year. Women and children at Bethany Home and the Frida Hartley Shelter are supported with care and compassion, making life’s challenges more bearable.
Winter brought the heartwarming winter warmers initiative, delivering scarves and beanies to those in need. Alongside this, the annual blanket drive, supported by donors and partners like Morningside Rotary and St Francis of Assisi Anglican Church, offered comfort to the community. This year, the outreach team also created reusable sanitary pads for patients at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and teenagers in need, demonstrating their commitment to dignity and care. Art therapy workshops provided a creative outlet, fostering healing and connection for many.
