Rotary Club of Rosebank reflects on a year of service and celebration

As the festive season brightens our days and the year draws to a close, the Rotary Club of Rosebank celebrates a remarkable year of service, growth, and community upliftment. True to the Rotary ethos of Service Above Self, the club’s dedicated members have worked tirelessly to make a difference in countless lives, creating ripples of hope and opportunity.

This year, the club focused on empowering youth, as investing in the next generation is crucial for a brighter future. Activities included Careers Day and supporting new Student Interact Clubs at Highlands North Boys High School and Holy Family College. The highlight was the Senior Youth Leadership Camp, where 59 Grade 11 learners honed their leadership skills and built lasting connections during a weekend at Kadesh Barnea in Hartbeespoort.

Rotary’s global reach shone brightly through its Youth Exchange Programme, which saw learners embarking on transformative journeys. The club currently hosts a long-term exchange student from Italy and will send two local learners to Germany and France for a year in January. In addition, seven learners are preparing for short-term exchanges with families in Argentina, Finland, France, Germany, and Italy. These cultural exchanges foster understanding, broaden horizons, and leave a lasting impact on the lives of all involved.

The Rotary Club of Rosebank remains dedicated to community support through initiatives like the bi-monthly SewaThon, which provided over 350 beanies and 100 tracksuit tops to children in need. They acknowledged eight primary school learners with certificates and book vouchers, supported the White Cane Project for the visually impaired, and awarded the Lester Connock Award, a bursary for postgraduate nursing students. The club celebrated unsung heroes with Community Service Awards and supported organisations like the Salvation Army Eventide Home and Charity Begins With Me.

To sustain these initiatives, fundraising and fellowship events added a spark of joy and camaraderie to the year. From lively bingo evenings and the Annual Quiz Night to skittles and weekly online quizzes, these gatherings united members and supporters with a shared purpose.

As the year ends, Lyn Collocott from the Rotary Club of Rosebank shares a festive message: “This season of giving reminds us of the power of kindness and community. Together, we can achieve extraordinary things. May this Christmas bring joy and love, and may the New Year be filled with hope and opportunities to make a difference.
