CHOC brings love to every step with Flip-Flop Day
This Valentine’s Day, South Africans are trading roses and chocolates for something far more meaningful, flip-flops and a R10 sticker in support of children battling cancer.

CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa is gearing up to host one of the country’s most heartfelt events – Flip Flop Day 2025. Taking place on February 14, this initiative invites South Africans to don their favourite flip-flops and show their support for children and teens battling cancer.
For just R10, participants can purchase a sticker and join a nationwide movement of love, unity, and hope. Flip Flop Day isn’t just about footwear; it’s about standing together as a nation for families facing one of life’s toughest challenges.

Walking together, one soleful step at a time
The idea behind Flip Flop Day is simple but impactful. Schools, workplaces, and communities across the country are encouraged to swap their usual footwear for flip-flops, creating a sea of support for the 1 500 children and teens CHOC cares for each year.
“Flip Flop Day is more than just a fun event; it’s a chance to turn an ordinary item into an extraordinary symbol of solidarity,” says Hedley Lewis, CEO of CHOC.
A journey of hope
Behind every R10 sticker is a family whose life has been upended by childhood cancer. Take eight-year-old Lebo, for example. Once full of energy, she was diagnosed with leukaemia, leaving her family overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn.
CHOC stepped in, offering counselling, guidance, and emotional support that helped Lebo and her family face each day with renewed strength. “CHOC brought us hope and showed us we weren’t alone,” shared Lebo’s mother.
Funds raised through Flip Flop Day directly support programmes like this, ensuring that no family has to navigate the cancer journey alone.

Flippie, the heart and sole of the campaign
Leading this year’s campaign is Flippie, CHOC’s energetic mascot and ambassador of love. Flippie reminds South Africans that every sticker, every pair of flip-flops, and every step taken on Flip Flop Day is a stride toward a brighter future for children facing cancer.

Why flip-flops?
Flip-flops represent comfort and freedom – two things that CHOC strives to provide for children undergoing treatment. This Valentine’s Day, let your flip-flops carry a message of hope and solidarity as we walk together to make a difference.
