St Mary’s School, Waverly tennis player reaches finals of the American Express Durban Super 8 Tournament
After reaching the finals, Nina Pieterse is now preparing for the upcoming International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments in Botswana in August.
St Mary’s School, Waverly learner and tennis player Nina Pieterse (15) finished second in the U16 singles event of the American Express Durban Super Eight Tournament, which took place from July 1 to 6.
The tennis player explained that she entered two weeks before the tournament and was seeded 4th in the draw. “It was an amazing experience, not only because of the results, but also because I made new friends. I hadn’t played a tournament since April, so I didn’t expect to do as well as I did.”
Nina is part of the 1st team at St Mary’s School, Waverley. She’s earned provincial colours by being selected for the Gauteng central team in the U13A, twice in the U15A, and most recently the U19A age groups.

“This marks my fourth consecutive year representing Gauteng Central,” she said. “Over the years, I’ve won a TSA Grand Prix and four mini tournaments. I also received the Best Junior Tennis Player Award at school this year.”
Nina concluded that she was preparing to play in two upcoming International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments in August in Botswana. “These are international events where players from all over the world compete. I’m training hard and aiming to give it my all. Hopefully, I can bring some good results home.”
