Excavation at Observatory intersection linked to burst pipe repairs

A large hole at the corner of Urania Street and Steyn Street in Observatory has been identified as the result of emergency repair work by Joburg Water.

The excavation, which was cordoned off with caution tape, raised safety concerns for both motorists and pedestrians navigating the busy intersection. The hole appeared to have been linked to burst pipe repairs, but at the time, it was unclear who was responsible for the site being left open.

Joburg Water has since confirmed that its teams carried out the work. Spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala explained that the excavation was part of urgent repair efforts.

“The excavation was carried out as part of emergency repairs to attend to a burst pipe that had been reported and required immediate attention,” said Shabalala.

She confirmed that backfilling of the affected area had been completed on August 18. The next step will involve the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), which is responsible for reinstating the road surface.

“A job card will be generated and submitted to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), which is responsible for reinstating the road surface. The exact date for the reinstatement will be confirmed once JRA has scheduled and completed the necessary work,” Shabalala added.

Until then, road users are urged to exercise caution when approaching the corner, particularly at night when visibility is poor.
