School shines on Casual Day with a call to look beyond the label

A celebration of unity, inclusion, and hope marked Casual Day at Hope School in Westcliff, where learners, partners, and advocates came together to champion a world that sees people before disability.

The Hope School in Westcliff came alive on September 5 as it hosted this year’s Casual Day, a national celebration of diversity and inclusion. This year’s theme, Beyond the Label: Embracing Unity Through Inclusion and Diversity, called on South Africans to see people with disabilities as whole individuals, rather than being defined by assistive devices or diagnoses.

The event was organised in partnership with the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), Brand South Africa, the Gauteng Office of the Premier, and the SABC.

Brand South Africa CEO, Neville Matjie, said nation building must start at home: “Before South Africa can showcase itself to the world, we must first practise inclusion here. Our responsibility is to ensure that young people, including those with disabilities, are part of our story.”

For Hope School principal, Wilfred Jacobs, the day was also a chance to highlight the school’s role. “We currently have 165 learners, but space for up to 200. Events like this help families see what the school offers—creating opportunities, supporting learners, and empowering young people,” he explained.

The morning featured presentations, messages from partners, and a heartfelt testimonial from Dr Hanri Kriel, who shared her lived experience of disability. The programme closed outdoors with music, cake and a group photo, ending the celebration on a joyful note.

Casual Day 2025’s message was clear: “It’s not just about dressing casual. It’s about seeing differently and living beyond labels.”
