Motorists continue to dodge flooded excavation

Heavy weekend rainfall floods hazardous excavation on Corlett Drive in Bramley.

Heavy rainfall has deepened Johannesburg Water’s hazardous excavation situated on Corlett Drive and High Road in Bramley.

On September 22, the Gazette reported that a suspected pipe burst was not only hazardous, but causing major traffic, as cars are forced to slow down and switch lanes to avoid the excavation.

Nkosinathi Xaba, Johannesburg Water’s regional manager, said a leak was detected and addressed.

However, when the reporter visited the excavation on September 29, it was filled with water from the heavy rainfall over the weekend, and barely barricaded.

More rainfall is expected in Johannesburg in the coming days, which will cause the excavation to, not only deepen, but widen onto the two-lane road.

The Gazette has reached out to Johannesburg Water about when they will backfill, and the article will be updated with the comment as soon as we receive it.
