Parktown Boys basketball captain aims high, on and off the court

Grade 11 learner Xolani Poto is making waves as Parktown Boys’ basketball first team captain, leading his team to historic victories while excelling in both sports and academics.

Xolani Poto, a Grade 11 learner at Parktown Boys High School, has made a significant mark in the school’s basketball scene.

Recently named captain of the first team for both this year and next, Xolani’s journey in the sport reflects a blend of passion, discipline, and leadership.

“I felt very happy,” Xolani admits. “I was selected for the first team last year, when I was still in Grade 10, so that was a huge achievement for me. To get to play first team again this year is another great opportunity.”

Xolani’s sporting life extends beyond basketball. He also plays rugby and participates in drama, highlighting his well-rounded approach to school life. “Sports and cultural activities teach you so much. You learn trust, teamwork, and how to manage your time between school and everything else.”

The Grade 11 recalled a defining moment this season. “Definitely our win against St John’s at the St Peter’s tournament. We were the first-ever Parktown first team to beat them, which was a huge feat for us. The chemistry on the court that day was perfect. Everyone just did their job.”

Leadership and motivation come naturally to Xolani, who credits his teammates for pushing him through challenging times.

“Even though there are tough moments, we push each other, and that’s what helps us win at the end of the day.”

Xolani’s love for basketball started at the age of 12, inspired by his older sister. “She used to play in high school, and I would watch her. One day, I asked if I could play with her.”

Today, Xolani looks up to NBA star Russell Westbrook, and supports the San Antonio Spurs.

Off the court, Xolani balances academics with his sporting commitments.

“Basketball has helped me structure my time better. I was a bit lazy before, but sports forced me to stick to a routine, and it’s helped me push myself in school too. Maths is my favourite subject, even though it’s hard, and I’m proud of the A’s I’ve achieved.”

Preparation for big games involves more than just practice. “Prayer, music, and meditation help me focus before a match.”

Being part of the first team has been a dream come true for Xolani, who first admired senior players back in Grade 8. “It means everything to me.”

Looking ahead, his hopes for next season are simple, but ambitious: “To win. I believe our team can genuinely achieve that, even if last season wasn’t our best.”

Xolani embodies the spirit of a true student-athlete, combining dedication, humility, and a relentless drive to succeed, both on the court and in the classroom. Parktown Boys’ basketball fans will be watching closely as this promising young captain leads his team into an exciting season.
