The DA received 97% of the vote, an increase from 70% in the previous contest. The African National Congress (ANC) secured 3%, while ActionSA, which had previously won 12%, did not participate in this round. Voter turnout was 18%, down from 53% in the prior election.
Election analyst Wayne Sussman noted that the DA won across all four voting districts. The ward includes Hyde Park and Parkmore, and is also the residence of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Johannesburg Regional Chairperson Wendy Alexander said the outcome reflects confidence in the DA’s ability to govern. Van Onselen will now take office as ward councillor, joining the party’s regional team.
While the by-election was limited in scale, observers suggest the result may influence discussions about Johannesburg’s political landscape ahead of the next local government elections.
