St Katharine’s learners donate backpacks to Mayfair West school

Grade 5 learners from St Katharine’s School visited Salvazione Christian School to hand over stationery-filled backpacks collected through a Christmas donation drive.

St Katharine’s Grade 5 learners visited Salvazione Christian School in Mayfair West on January 23 to hand over stationery and backpacks to pre-primary and primary learners, as part of the school’s ongoing charity initiatives.

The visit followed St Katharine’s Christmas Donation Drive held last year, during which the school partnered with Pathways Promise, a company that creates and distributes school backpacks filled with essential stationery to children in need.

Each fully stocked backpack, valued at R300, was donated to learners at Salvazione Christian School, with funds raised sufficient to supply four classes. The initiative aimed to ensure that young learners would start the school year with the basic tools needed for learning.

Grade 5 learner Cecily Gibb, who took part in the initiative and visited the school, said the experience highlighted the importance of giving back to the community.

“It was really special to pack the backpacks and then see the children receive them,” she said. “The younger children were very excited, and the older learners were very grateful. It made us realise how important it is to keep helping others.”

St Katharine’s regularly hosts charity events and community outreach programmes, including annual donation drives, charity runs and festive collections. The school has also maintained an ongoing relationship with Salvazione Christian School through various engagement initiatives.

According to Cecily, the visit taught learners valuable lessons about responsibility and compassion. “It showed us that donating time and resources can make a real difference to people who have less,” she said.

The school said initiatives such as these form part of its commitment to developing socially responsible learners while supporting schools and communities in need.
