Friends of the Library Killarney host book sale to uplift community space

Community members are encouraged to support the second-hand book sale happening at Killarney Library on March 27 and 28.

Residents are encouraged to clear their bookshelves and support a community initiative to revitalise the Killarney Library.

Friends of the Library Killarney will host a second-hand book sale at Killarney Mall on March 27 and 28 from 10:00 to 17:00. Visitors can browse a wide selection of titles and purchase books for R20 each.

The funds raised will support improvements at the library and help sustain its growing list of community activities.

According to member Yasirah Madhi, the initiative began as a way to draw attention to the library, while raising funds for small but meaningful improvements. “This is only our second book sale, but the first one was such a success that we decided to do it again. It’s a fun community activity, and it also helps us raise funds for the library itself.”

Madhi explained that although the group has approached the city for assistance, financial support has been limited. As a result, the volunteers rely heavily on community involvement to keep their initiatives going.

“The main aim is to bring publicity to the library and uplift the space.

We would like to make small cosmetic improvements over time, such as improving lighting, changing flooring, or adding fresh paint, so that it becomes a more welcoming place.”

The group also hosts regular community activities, including children’s story times, book readings, and craft days. Funds raised from the book sale help cover the cost of materials and snacks for these events.

Madhi said the previous sale sparked encouraging support from residents who began donating books after seeing the project in action. However, children’s books remain in short supply.

“We have a good range of modern fiction and non-fiction, but we would really love more children’s books.”

Residents can donate books at Killarney Mall’s basement parking area near the postboxes before March 23. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with sorting books and helping on the day of the sale.
