Subsoil drainage could put an end to Illovo’s 10-year underground leak

Illovo’s 10-year-old underground leak, on Forte Street, could finally come to an end in three weeks-time.

Johannesburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) head of operations Khaya Gqibitole, on March 26, confirmed to the publication that the JRA team will install subsoil drainage, to deal with the 10-year leak on Forte Street in Illovo, in three weeks’ time.

“This will happen, if the weather is permitting. The plan is to reconstruct the subsoil and, thereafter, clear the entire line after construction.”

This comes after Ward 74 councillor Kayser-Echeozonjoku raised concerns about the poor state of the road, which was caused by the leak, saying that it was unacceptable that the leak had gone on for as long as it had.

The acting head of the Corlett Drive Improvement Precinct, Mark Pencharz, also highlighted that the leak sometimes changed from being a dribble to a flow, eroding the road systematically over time.

The publication will continue to follow up with JRA regarding the completion of the subsoil drainage.
