Jazz for young people workshop helps youngsters prepare for the future
The National School of the Arts hosted the Jazz for Young People Workshop, allowing learners to learn from the award-winning artist Msaki.
Young artists gathered at the National School of the Arts (NSA) on July 21 for a Jazz for Young People Workshop, where award–winning artist Asanda Mvana, professionally known as Msaki, encouraged learners to embrace creativity and grow their skills.
The workshop, part of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival’s development programme, gave learners the chance to hear Msaki discuss navigating a career in music, songwriting, and wellness.

Each participant received six creative reflection cards to consider the challenges and opportunities they face in the creative industry. Msaki said she was impressed by the learners’ enthusiasm and insight.
“Firstly, I love that it’s assuming their ability to connect and to understand from such a young age. I was blown away by the young audience I had today.
None of the concepts or ideas that I had to share was foreign or difficult for them to engage with,” she said. She added that South Africa’s youth have unique musical abilities and advised aspiring artists to seek environments that nurture their talents.

NSA artistic director Brenda Sakellarides said the school was proud to host the workshop again.
“The National School of the Arts is so proud to be the host venue of the Jazz for Young People Festival, which is the development angle of the Joy of Jazz,” she said.
Learner Rue Muchenje said she attended hoping to learn from Msaki’s experiences. “I was really excited to learn about her experience.
She was telling us a lot about things to help us improve with our music journey and to catch songs from different environments and spaces. I’m always open to learning more,” she said.
The workshop concluded with a lively performance by the learners and a solo by Msaki, leaving participants inspired to continue their creative journeys.
