Frustration mounts as safety measures on Kloof Street are delayed
As the waiting mounts for the promised safety measures on Kloof Street, JRA states that they are waiting for paint to implement.
Johannesburg Road’s Agency’s (JRA) delay in painting a zebra crossing as a traffic calming measure on a busy Kloof Street continues to worry and frustrate Linksfield Primary School’s principal Tamin Davidson.
A journalist first met Davidson in June, when she expressed her concern about the busy road, especially after school, as well as the unsafe pavement which was left dug up after fibre was installed.

JRA’s head of department in regional operations Mpho Maruping’s response was that JRA would implement the necessary road safety measures to enhance the safety of learners crossing the street.
“Additional pedestrian crossings will be implemented as part of these interventions. Once we are in a position to commence implementation, we will communicate accordingly.”
Maruping added that with regards to the dug-up pavement, the wayleave department would investigate to determine which fibre company was responsible for reinstating the affected sidewalk. “As indicated, the excavation dates back several years and may have been undertaken without the necessary approvals.

Feedback will be provided once the investigation has been concluded and the responsible party has been identified.”
A journalist met with Davidson again on August 13, as well as Ward 72 councillor Daniel Schay, on Kloof Street where the situation remained risky to learners who cross the street. “We have begged for over a year for a zebra crossing or a speed hump as a calming traffic measure from JRA,” noted the school principal.
Maruping, on August 11, explained that the depot was waiting for their paint delivery in order to implement the recommended safety measures from traffic engineering. “We will communicate once paint is delivered and the depot is ready to commence with the works.”
Schay expressed his dissatisfaction in the roads agency’s lack of resources to carry out their duties.
