Parktown High School for Girls learner heads to nationals in the Talent Africa competition
Rachel Mathi's speciality includes performing musical theatre.
Parktown High School for Girls learner, Rachel Mathi recently walked away as a gold medalist at the regional trials of the Talent Africa Competition.
Talent Africa is a competition that showcases talents which include singing, dancing and acting. There are 4 levels, the regional, provincial, national and international.
Rachel performed 5 items, 4 open pieces and one musical acting, “My choices were my specialities which was in the genre of Broadway and Musical Theatre.”
Her achievements included medals in vocal jazz, vocal broadway, musical acting, vocal opening 1 and vocal opening 2.
The learner noted that it was not her first time competing in the competition as she has been taking part in this competition since last year and it felt like competing in a familiar environment.
The Grade 9 learner added that she enjoyed performing musical theatre as it is where she could express herself most,
“It was the first year I did all musical theatre and achieved golds and higher golds for all my items. It felt amazing because this is what I have been working towards.”
Rachel also recently received her Gauteng colours for a third time in a row in the arts, “These are given by the Federation of Performing Arts of South Africa once you represent your province or country and it is always such an honour.”
She concluded that she looks forward to seeing her old friends, making new ones and performing new pieces since she was off to national stages.
“I feel blessed to have this gift and so I am always just happy to be on stage.”
