Jan Celliers Laerskool en Preprimêr came alive with artwork on September 16, during the opening night of its 18th Art and Design Fair.

Ceramic vases, bags and paintings filled the school hall, bringing it to life with vibrant colours.

Among the guests was fashion designer Lezanne Viviers, who encouraged attendees to collect sentimental items, whether big or small, because they are also art.

Art and Design Fair organiser Carike Greffrath said the school is proud to host the 18th exhibition.

“The 18th art exhibition is not a fundraiser but the school’s commitment to the arts industry and our celebration of the creative community,” said Greffrath. “Every year the turnout grows, especially with external visitors, which shows us that the exhibition is reaching the right audience.”

South African feminist artist and activist Laura ‘Lady Skollie’ Windvogel, who was the guest speaker, said she was honoured to be invited to the art event.

“Such events are important to encourage children to explore their artistic sides,” said Windvogel. “It’s amazing that we live in a world where artists can make money from their passion in different sectors as well.”

Windvogel spent a few days at the school interacting with different grades, encouraging learners to showcase their artistic talents through drawing and painting.

Her work has been exhibited throughout the country and was presented at the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair in 2016. In 2019, she was commissioned to design a new R5 coin commemorating 25 years of South Africa’s democracy.

The Art and Design Fair continues until Saturday, September 19.
