5km walk helps Kingsmead College raise funds for breast cancer patients

Goodwill Day brings families and service partners together to support women facing financial barriers to critical surgery.

Kingsmead College marked 93 years on October 10 with a day dedicated to courage, connection and giving back.

The annual Goodwill Day brought families and community members together for a celebration that looked beyond the school’s birthday, focusing instead on the difference people can make when they unite behind a common cause.

The morning began bright and early with the annual 5km Walk for Courage, giving participants an opportunity to get active while supporting women who face financial barriers to breast cancer treatment.

This year’s walk supported Project Flamingo, a breast cancer advocacy initiative that helps women who cannot afford breast cancer surgery.

For those affected by breast cancer, the journey can be physically and emotionally demanding, with the cost of treatment adding another layer of difficulty. Through the walk, Kingsmead College’s community helped direct attention and funds towards women who need access to potentially life-changing surgery.

Proceeds from walk tickets and registrations will go towards Project Flamingo, while a month-long fitness challenge throughout October is extending the fundraising effort beyond the event itself.

Participants can continue contributing to the cause while embracing healthier habits, turning an ordinary fitness goal into an opportunity to support others.

More than 49 service partners join cause

Goodwill Day also brought together more than 49 service partners, creating opportunities for community awareness, engagement and fundraising for various initiatives, including learner bursaries.

The involvement of these partners highlighted the role schools can play in connecting people with organisations working to address challenges within their communities.

Throughout the day, families enjoyed an atmosphere of fun and togetherness, with the celebrations reflecting the spirit behind the event’s name.

While turning 93 was a milestone worth celebrating, the occasion also offered an opportunity to reflect on the importance of looking beyond oneself and supporting those who may need a helping hand.

From every step taken during the Walk for Courage to the work of the service partners involved, the day’s activities showed how a birthday celebration can become a platform for something greater.

As Kingsmead College enters another year, its Goodwill Day celebrations offered a reminder that a lasting legacy is built not only on history, but also on the positive difference made in the lives of others.
