Keith Peacock, an Observatory resident writes:
It is with great concern that I saw the article in the North Eastern Tribune with the headline DA Still on the move [Week Ending 21 February] in which it was reported that Anthony Still has had his membership of the DA terminated and therefore ceases to be a councillor in the City of Johannesburg.
Still was without any doubt the most experienced DA councillor in terms of his previous excellent work as a senior local authority employee, commitment to the city and its diverse communities, his relevant academic qualifications and level of integrity and honesty.
The City had already lost the skills that he brought to his early position as a member of the mayoral committee, a position he was removed from, when he quite rightly refused to comply with an [alleged] illegal instruction of the then Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba, to sack the CEO of City Power. A refusal which both showed his integrity and an understanding of the law.
He has now been removed as a councillor for refusing to disrupt council proceedings on the issue of the recommendation of the ANC, the majority party in the City, for the new Speaker of Council, and the issue the DA national leadership had decided was not worth pursuing, says much about the DA and little about Still. It certainly does not bode well for the DA within the City of Johannesburg to unceremoniously discard such a valuable person who has served the City well.
