Teams from the Alex Northrand LFA fail to qualify for the ‘David versus Goliath’ Cup

JOBURG – Alexandra and the Northrand will not be represented again in the Nedbank Cup as the township teams continue to falter in this lucrative cup competition.

The South African Football Association (Safa) has confirmed the eight teams from the amateur league that will participate in the lucrative Nedbank Cup 2020 which kicks off in February.

The teams from the Safa amateur structures that have qualified for the round of 32, along with the 16 from the Absa Premiership and another eight from the National First Division’s GladAfrica Championship, have been confirmed and the draw for the cup competition will be conducted on 9 January.

A number of new faces have come to the fore but there is still a fair share of representation of familiar names, which this time only includes teams from the provincial ABC Motsepe League, such as Happy Wanderers from KwaZulu-Natal; Passion FC from Mpumalanga; Hungry Lion from Northern Cape; North West University from North West; Zizwe United from Western Cape; Super Eagles from the Free State; Vaal University of Technology from Gauteng; and Amavarara from the Eastern Cape.

Like always, there will be no team from the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (Alex Northrand LFA) represented in the Nedbank Cup despite the fact that this league has three teams that ply their trade in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League, which consists of teams such as Alex United FC from Alex, Alex Black Aces from Linksfield in the Northrand and another Alex outfit, Baberwa FC.

A team such as Alex United has never qualified for the Nedbank Cup despite having played in this league for all its life of close to 30 years, since its days as Vodacom League, then Safa Second Division (SSD) League and now the ABC Motsepe League.

Aces and Baberwa are newcomers to this league, having played five and three years respectively but they too, in that period, have failed to make it to eight teams from the amateur league to qualify for the country’s richest cup competition which has become to be known as the ‘David versus Goliath Cup’ after the sheer fact that it pits amateur teams with their professional counterparts.
