Pirates 21k underway as runners take on Joburg’s toughest half marathon
The sold-out 48th Pirates 21k is currently underway, with 5 000 runners tackling steep hills, tough climbs and breath-taking views.
5 000 runners are out on the roads this morning for the annual Pirates 21k, widely known as the hardest half marathon in Gauteng.
The sold-out race started at Pirates Club in Greenside, where runners gathered early, full of excitement and nerves, ready to take on the demanding route. The opening kilometres through the leafy suburbs of Greenside and Linden offered a gentle and quiet start, allowing athletes to settle into their pace.

But the calm did not last long.

The famous Northcliff Hills soon put runners to the test, with three tough climbs challenging even the most experienced athletes. Those with enough energy were treated to stunning views of the city along the way.

The final hill reached 1 760 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in any road race in Gauteng. Water points placed along the route helped runners push through the steep and tiring ascent.
After the punishing climb, runners enjoyed long downhill sections as they made their way back towards Pirates Club, drawing motivation from the knowledge that the finish line was getting closer.
