St Charles College U19 win their first game of the St John’s College basketball tournament

St John’s 2026 basketball tournament is officially underway until February 22.

Sportsmanship, camaraderie and excitement filled St John’s College’s basketball courts on February 19, which marked day one of four of the school’s highly anticipated tournament.

Parktown High School for Boys U19 played against St Charles College U19, which marked the first game of the tournament. St Charles walked away victoriously, beating Parktown 53-40.

St Charles captain, Tivadar Maphosa, said he was elated with the score.

“We had a good game against Parktown, but we need to limit our turnovers. We played as a team, which is the most important thing, and our win has set the tone for our day.”

Parktown High captain, Xolani Poto, said that although it was a tough game, there were lessons taken.

In a nail-biting game, St John’s College Preparatory U13 beat Redhill School.

The St John’s coach, who didn’t want to be named, said he was proud of how his team played and looked forward to the rest of the tournament.

The executive headmaster of St John’s College, Dale Jackson, said, “Sport plays a powerful role in shaping young people, instilling discipline, perseverance, and the importance of teamwork.
