VIDEO: A Kes fest to remember
HOUGHTON – Schools from across the country put on a sporting show of note at the Kes Easter Festival.

Even the most avid rugby and hockey fans had their fill at the 16th annual Kes Easter Festival.
It was a weekend full of triumphs and heartbreaks, as 36 teams from across the country played for glory at King Edward VII School, Houghton.
But as a whopping 84 matches kept many eyes on the fields and astroturf, a beer garden and numerous food stalls also ensured fans, friends and family could enjoy themselves in-between games.

“The essence of our festival is to provide the players with the opportunity to showcase their skills, without the hindrance of the typical pressures that so often play out in the normal league season,” said King Edward’s headmaster, David Lovatt.
He acknowledged organisers and sponsors and invited sports fans to share the spirit of the unique event.

Kes managed to finish on a high in the hockey division, with a 2–0 win over Paarl Boys’ High School. It was the home hockey team’s third win in the festival. They only lost one game and drew one.
But it was Westville Boys’ High School and Grey College Bloemfontein who stole the show on the astroturf.
Each side finished undefeated in the festival, with four wins and a draw apiece.

Whenever Kes played a rugby match, a large crowd would turn up in support, and hundreds of schoolboys proudly clad in their blazers would rise to chant war-cries from the stands.
The support helped because Kes managed two dazzling wins and a narrow 23–17 defeat to Wynberg Boys’ High School.
