Hyde Park hosts Edenvale at annual derby
HYDE PARK – The annual winter derby was an activity filled sports day with netball, rugby and hockey on play.

The much-anticipated winter derby finally arrived on 9 May. Hyde Park High School was excited to host Edenvale High who they would compete against in a number of friendlies.
The large sports fields were filled with several sports kits of various colours as the youngsters represented different sport disciplines.
“The ethos of this derby is to promote friendship and camaraderie between the two schools,” Avril Wright, Hyde Park High School’s marketing and liaison secretary said.
The weather did not disappoint either as a crisp autumn afternoon made for some pleasant games in the derby’s three sporting codes – rugby, hockey and netball. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the first-team rugby match with loud cheers and school war cries filling the air as the spectators enthusiastically supported their teams.
Hyde Park’s first rugby team was generously sponsored by Ford Fury and this collaboration promoted pride and unity within the team as they wore their brand new jerseys.

Edenvale secured a 49–19 win against Hyde Park’s first team, and although it was a tough game, all the players showed their mettle. The fields saw a total of 600 participants exhibiting skill and sportsmanship.
This event was an excellent warm-up for the first boys’ hockey team who participated in the Aitken Tournament which took place on 11 to 13 May at the Wanderers Astro. Edenvale’s boys first team won 1–0. Hyde Park’s first team hockey girls played a valiant game but lost 0–2.
Moncherie Massyn, netball coach and teacher at Edenvale said, “Their shooting is excellent, however, they should work on their passing and team spirit.” The matches ended late in the day with an unfortunate 25–5 loss to Hyde Park.

Friendship and camaraderie were the actual winners at Hyde Park High’s first derby of the term, with exciting winter sporting codes to follow
