Theatre group collaborate with Swiss artist

JOBURG - The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative will embark on an exciting, exhilarating journey with renowned Swiss visual artist and musician Charlotte Hug.

The collaboration will delve into the fragility of relationships between people and the immediacy of those connections.

Event promoter Christabel Zulu said, “Hug’s innovative musical-visual solo performances in distinctive locations and her interdisciplinary work have created an international furore.”

She said Hug constantly broke new ground and “reinvented” the viola.

“Hug’s speciality is a blend of viola and vocals, which [gave] rise to her distinctive tonal language,” she said.

“It is these qualities that make her an intriguing and welcomed collaborative partner with the ever-inquisitive and versatile company members of the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative.”

The new work will draw on elements from Back, a previous work by the collaborative.

“Back dealt strongly with notions of memory and desire, looking closely at issues concerning love, loss, intimacy, jealousy, belonging and isolation,” said Zulu.

“[It will also draw on] Son-Icons [where she ‘draws’ inner visualisations of the sounds with both hands] as used by Hug as inspiration for the improvisatory elements of this work.”

Zulu said the performance would reveal “the invisible texts between people, artists and the way in which relationships leave residues for our future selves to find”.

The cast for this collaboration will feature Nosiphiwo Samente, Thulani Chauke, Fana Tshabalala, Thami Majela, Irven Teme and Charlston van Rooyen.

It was made possible by project partners the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, Pro Helvetica, the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative, the University of Johannesburg’s Arts and Culture Department and its faculty of art design and architecture, and Buz Publicity.

The performance will take place on 28 February at the University of Johannesburg’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture’s atrium, at the Bunting Road campus, at 2pm.
