Acid attack accused denied bail
JOBURG - The man who is accused of burning his ex-girlfriend with acid was denied bail when he made his appearance in Johannesburg Magistrates' Court.

According to Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Nurse Sanyane the 41-year-old Jan Pieter was denied bail because the court believed that he was a threat to the victim and her next of kins. Sanyane said, “Pieter was sent to Sun City Correctional Services Centre in Naturena, Soweto after he was denied bail by the court and was considered a threat to the victim’s next of kins including his daughter. The investigative officer was instrumental in opposing bail for the alleged perpetrator.”
The Norwood police had traced and arrested the suspect at an old age home in Vereeniging. In the article Ex-boyfriend burns woman with acid, North Eastern Tribune, week ending 14 November, Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Nurse Sanyane said the woman was fighting for her life in an intensive care unit after her ex-boyfriend allegedly poured acid liquid over her, burning her face and body.
The incident took place at the corner of Pembroke Street and 9th Avenue, Sydenham. Sanyane said the woman was walking on the street when her ex-boyfriend charged towards her and poured the acid on her face and body. She said, “The liquid acid started on the face and fell down to her body which left her unconscious.” Sanyane said the boyfriend fled the scene.
Sanyane said the police had been following all the leads and managed to nab the suspect on 27 November.
She said, “The suspect was found sitting in a room in the retirement home where his father lives on 5 Bashees Street, Three Rivers, Vereeniging and the suspect was charged for attempted murder.
On the day of the incident, the victim was rushed to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Sanyane said the victim was later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto in a critical condition.
