Voices of Joburg – “I rap better than A.K.A.”
JOBURG - City Buzz took to the streets of Joburg once again to find some interesting people in the city, but this time it was the person featured in this article who found us.
Walking through the busy Park Station, City Buzz was approached by a man who claimed to be a better rapper than a man who is killing the South African rap game at the moment, A.K.A.
“I have rapped around Soweto – there’s open mic sessions in Soweto,” explained the street rapper who goes by the name Mtshepido.
“The most interesting response I’ve ever had was when I was rapping to a group of three people and then, basically, one of the guys called other people to come watch, and I ended up rapping for more than 20 people.
“We attracted the attention of a guitarist too, and he started playing while I was rapping. It happened near Park Station and it was a good day. I made close to a thousand rand that day,” he said.

The man who was obviously popular with the people who frequent Park Station said the best place to perform was Braamfontein because the people were more open to listening to him.
“In the CBD, people seem to be scared of being mugged or hijacked, so they don’t really want to listen to me. The worst part of the job is definitely the security – they always come to chase me away and tell me that I’m not allowed to do my thing here.”
This under-appreciated talent may not be in the limelight yet, but judging from the attention received by the rapper, his time in the spotlight is soon to come.
