Hacks for throwing a tie-dye birthday party for your child

Read on for our best tips and ideas for how to throw an unforgettable tie-dye party for your child and their friends!

Forget about pony rides and clowns for your child’s birthday. Tie-dye is making a major comeback right now and makes an excellent birthday theme for kids of all ages. Here’s all you need to know about throwing a tie-dye party so you can get started.

Where should you host your tie-dye party?

Setting up your tie-dye party in the proper location is half the fight of having a stress-free tie-dye party. The time of year, weather forecast, and accessible mess-friendly location all influence whether you tie-dye outdoors or indoors, at home or in a public space. The most important factors to consider while selecting a location are: ease of cleaning (no carpeting or fine furniture that could become discoloured from dye) and availability of a water source for both filling water and dumping soiled dye buckets.

What you need

The following is a list of the things you’ll need for your tie-dye party:

  • Plastic tablecloths
  • Rubber or latex gloves (one set for each child)
  • Aprons
  • Rubber bands
  • Buckets or large bowls
  • Large paintbrushes or transparent spout cap bottles
  • Kid’s white short or long-sleeved T-shirts in a variety of different sizes (100% cotton is the best option)
  • Tie-dye kit or a selection of different coloured cold water fabric dyes

How to get started

  1. Set up a table in an area where you feel at ease tie-dyeing, having in mind that dye can drop or splatter. Use a plastic tablecloth to cover the tables.
  2. Cover the floor with a plastic tarp if tie-dyeing inside. Tape the tarp down along the edges with masking tape to keep it in place.
  3. Fill your dye bottles ahead of time so your guests can jump right in
  4. Fill tiny containers or bowls with rubber bands for easy gripping when dyeing.
  5. Fill a bucket or large bowl with water for each 3-4 individuals and place it on the tie-dye table or another adjacent surface.
